A TOUR OF THE MAIN MONUMENTS IN THE CITY

Big Ben

 

Big Ben was built from 1843 to 1859. It’s a 13.5 tones bell located in the Clock Tower. It can be heard up to six kilometers around. There are 335 steps before seeing it, in the top of the Clock Tower. Bib Ben can only be seen by British citizens.

The bell rings every hour. When the parliament meets, the British flag floats on top of the tower.

 

 

Westminister  Abbey

 

The Westminster Abbey was founded in 960. Its style is gothic. The real name of the Abbey is Collegiate Church of St. Pierre.

It is the place for the burial of the kings and Queens of England and of famous men and women too. It is also the place for the coronation of Kings and Queens.  The coronation chair or throne was ordered by King Edward in 1296. The majority of the sovereigns of England and Great Britain were crowned on this wooden throne. The throne is today particularly monitored because lots of visitors throughout the centuries have tried to engrave their name on it.

 

Houses of Parliament

 

The Parliament of England was founded in the thirteenth century in London, it served as Supreme parliament. It became the principal advisory body to the king and the king. By the Act of Union of 1707, it formed the basis of Britain parliament and later of the United Kingdom. The king summons the barons, but bourgeois foreign merchants, Jews or knights elected to speak and discuss topics of their choice.
